Terms of service

Version:
v0.2 — draft
Drafted:

Effective date:
Not yet in effect — takes effect at public launch, after counsel review

These are the working terms for Rooms, drafted in the same plain language as the rest of the product and published before they bind anyone. They describe the product as it actually behaves today.

Section 1

What the service is

Rooms is a coordination service: a shared, auditable place — a room — where a group organises a commitment together. The service keeps the plan, the people, the commitments, the money states, and the history in one record that every member of the room can read.

Rooms is not a bank, a wallet, an escrow service, or a payment institution. It never holds a balance for you. When money moves, it moves through licensed payment partners; the service tracks and displays each payment’s state as the partner reports it, and calls a payment settled only after the partner confirms it.

Section 2

The sandbox stage

SandboxThe service currently runs as a sandbox reference environment.

  • No real money moves. Every collection runs against a simulated payment partner, and every surface that touches money says so.
  • No real email is delivered; messages render to a local outbox in the reference environment.
  • The environment exists to demonstrate and verify the product. It may be reset between build stages, and rooms created in it should be treated as practice, not as a system of record for real commitments.

Section 3

Your account

You sign up with your email and a password of your choosing, and you’re responsible for keeping that password to yourself — no page, room, or email from us will ever ask for it. You can see every session signed into your account and revoke any of them from settings; resetting your password signs out every other session automatically.

The service applies rate limits and may lock an account that shows signs of abuse or compromise. A locked account isn’t a deleted one: recovery exists, and security actions on your account are recorded where you can read them.

Section 4

Rooms and the record

What you contribute to a room — commitments, changes, notes, amounts — is visible to the members of that room. That mutual visibility is the product’s core promise, so joining a room means accepting it.

A room’s history is append-only. Events are never edited or deleted; corrections are recorded as new entries that say what they correct. Leaving a room ends your obligations in it going forward, but does not rewrite what already happened — the record belongs to the group that made it.

Section 5

Money

  • Amounts in a room are always in one of four explicit states — promised, on its way, settled, or failed — and the service never blends them or labels unconfirmed money as paid.
  • Any cost attached to a payment is shown to the payer before they confirm. Nothing is folded silently into a share; the current fee position is on the pricing page.
  • Refunds and corrections are recorded entries with visible math, never silent adjustments.
  • Commitments inside a room are promises between the members of the group. The service records and coordinates them; it does not guarantee that a member will pay, and it is not a party to the group's plans.

Section 6

Acceptable use

Rooms exist for genuine shared commitments. Don’t use the service to defraud, harass, or mislead people; don’t collect money under false pretenses; don’t probe or disrupt the service’s security; and don’t use someone else’s account. A room used to harm its own members defeats the only reason the service exists, and we may restrict or close rooms and accounts involved in that.

Section 7

Ending things

You can stop using the service at any time and start closing your account from settings. Rooms have their own endings — completed, archived, or cancelled — and a closed room stays readable to its members. Account closure never rewrites a room’s shared history, for the same reason nothing else does.

Section 8

What we promise — and what we can’t

We work to keep the record accurate, the money states truthful to what payment partners report, and problems plainly communicated — those commitments are spelled out on the trust page.

In its sandbox stage the service is provided as-is, without warranties, and with liability limited to the greatest extent the law allows. The final wording of this section — including the governing law and the limits that apply at launch — is exactly what counsel review will settle before these terms take effect.

Section 9

Changes to these terms

These terms are versioned like the product. Any change produces a new version with a new date at the top of this page, and material changes will be announced before they take effect. The current version is v0.2 — draft, drafted July 17, 2026.
